Hyundai Motor Group now has four vehicle types—hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), electric vehicles (EV), and fuel-cell electric vehicles (FECV)—geared towards completing a full eco-lineup of over 28 models by 2020. These technological breakthroughs are made possible thanks to the hard work and close collaboration among Hyundai Motor Group affiliates.
- Green technologies to lead the global market
Beyond developing eco-friendly cars, Hyundai Motor Group is pressing ahead with green technologies in all aspects of business. To put the concept of a green life into practice, Hyundai E&C is carrying out research on the reduction of energy and ways to create a pleasant indoor environment at its Green Smart Innovation Center.
As global warming accelerates, Hyundai Motor Group is making efforts to de-velop technologies that will reduce greenhouse emissions. Hyundai E&C has secured new and renewable energy technology for the production of fuel for automobiles and urban gas supply by refining biogas produced by organic waste.
Also, construction of a food waste bio-energy center has been completed in Chungju. Hyundai Engineering, the only Korean company with experience in geothermal power plants, has completed Africa’s biggest geothermal power plant in Olkaria, Kenya.

Car Using Alternative Fuel
The Sonata and Grenadier made by Hyundai Motors as well as K5∙K7 hybrid model by Kia Motors are recognized for their success in the area of exhaust gas reduction and improved performance. The steady commitment and collaboration of all affiliates has led to the production of Korea’s first non-polluting electrical car in 2012, and the world’s first fuel cell vehicle in 2013, and continues to strengthen our eco-friendly car technology competitiveness with originality and innovation.
- Lightweight Automobile That Increases Fuel Efficiency
The lightweight automobile improves fuel efficiency and reduces exhaust gas; in this sense, it offers the benefits of eco-friendliness and reduces the running resistance and inertia of a car, and ultimately enhances the performance of the car. We worked to make our automobile lighter by using alternative materials such as new steel material, aluminum and magnesium composite material.
- Disassemble the Scrap Car and Recycling System
Recycling bodies and parts of cars is an eco-friendly technology with the double benefits of preventing environmental pollution and saving resources. HMG established an “Automobile Resource Recycling Center” in Namyang Institute of Technology and R&D in 2005, and developed an ongoing dismantling system that processes scrapped cars in an eco-friendly manner. HMG also develops and supports material recycling technology, which creates cars that can be easily recycled and having less waste.
