KIA Motors’ Hwasung Plant broke the 3 million-unit mark in aggregated production on the 27th.
KIA has disclosed that it had produced over 3 million cars in 11 years and 8 months since it began its production in 1989.
On this day, in the Optima Finish Assembly Facility, KIA held a commemorative ceremony celebrating the 3,000,000th car production in the presence of Foreman Kim Mu-il of Hwasung Plant, employees and directors along with the representatives of other related companies. The 3,000,000th car was the medium size sedan KIA Optima. This Optima is scheduled to be sold to the U.S.
The KIA Hwasung Plant, which boasts 7.26 million square meter plottage and 1.6 million square meter floorage, was established in 1989. With the Concord production as the start, it had been producing Capital, Sephia, Credos and others, and is currently manufacturing Spectra, Spectra Wing, Optima, Potentia, Enterprise, Sportage, Carens, etc.
Among the cars that had been manufactured so far, Sephia has been produced the most with 1,090,000 units, followed by Sportage and Credos with 487,000 and 329,000 units respectively. The KIA’s recent representative RV Carens currently records 189,000 units in production, while 104,000 units of Optima were assembled in this factory.
Beginning with the September 1995 record of having produced a total of one million cars in five years and 10 months since it first commenced the production, it achieved two million units in three years and three months thereafter by December 1998, from which the record of three million units was accomplished this time. Since it took two years and seven months to reach from two million to three million-line, it’s proved that the period of breaking the one million-unit barrier is ever becoming shorter.
This means the productivity per capita is increasing. And the Hwasung Plant had taken the 4th place in the world from the comparative research on the productivity of world’s automotive factories conducted by EIU (Economist Intelligence Unit), which is a world’s prominent British economic research institute that publishes the Economist Weekly.
The Hwasung Plant has the production capacity of 600,000 units per year. It plans to produce a total of 406,000 units including the 152,000 units for the Korean market and 254,000 for the overseas market. Starting from the end of this year, it will also commence the production of project ‘BL’, the ‘Dream Car’.
About 11,000 employees are currently working in the three factories of Hwasung Plant. Factory #1 produces Sportage and Carens for the Korean market, and factory #2 manufactures Sephia, Spectra and Carens for overseas market, whereas Optima, Enterprise and Spectra Wing are produced from Factory #3. These factories form a full-sized plant consisted of 746 manufacturing processes, while the assembly conveyers for the three facilities add to 4.3km in total.
Hwasung Plant is an environmentally friendly facility that’s recognized as the Korea’s representative industrial inspection factory as it’s annually visited by about 20,000 observers including some of the important figures of foreign countries.
