- New-look people mover receives full makeover and new diesel engine option
Seoul, May 24 2002 - Following hard on the heels of the new Sorento, Kia Motors unveiled its new Carens mini-MPV at the Madrid motor show on May 23. The new look car features extensive restyling and, significantly, a diesel option to increase its appeal among European motorists. Available in five and six seater versions, the new Carens continues to build on Kia`s growing reputation for providing world class quality at value prices.
Producing 82.5 kW of power @ 4, 000 rpm and a maximum torque of 245 Nm @ 2,000 rpm, the 2.0 litre common rail diesel engine is among the most powerful in its class. Other engine options for Europe include a 1.8 and 1.6 DOHC gasoline powerplants. Both the diesel and the 1.8 litre gasoline engine come with a choice of 4 speed automatic or five speed manual transmissions. The 1.6 litre version is equipped with a five speed manual gearbox.
The exterior of the Carens has been completely restyled, from the new trapezoidal radiator grille that provides a clear design link with its larger sibling, the Carnival / Sedona, to the wide, high-visibility tail-light cluster and redesigned tailgate. Larger wheels and tires give the car greater stability and redesigned wheel covers and sporty alloy wheels add a touch of flair to the overall package.
Inside, the new Carens offers a range of standard options that rival anything else on the market. An updated instrument cluster and a distinctive shield-shaped center console in an elegant metallic trim are the most obvious improvements. A closer look reveals a redesigned steering wheel and new materials to add a sense of refinement to the two-tone interior.
A full range of storage areas includes seat back pockets, door-mounted map pockets with integrated bottle holders, armrest console boxes, cup holders and an overhead console that contains storage space for sunglasses, a digital clock and a map lamp. In the cargo area is a concealed luggage tray for valuable items and a cargo storage net.
Power door locks and power windows are standard on all models, as are power outlets in both the passenger cabin and luggage area. A four speaker audio system is also standard with a CD player optional. Other options include air conditioning and antilock brakes.
The new Carens features increased interior space and a fully adjustable driver`s seat. The six seater version features a split second row that allows for independent recline and slide functions. The five seater version features a three point center seatbelt.
The range of seating options makes the Carens exceptionally versatile, with a full-flat configuration in the five seat and cushion folding third row in the six seater version. The six seater also features a cooling system with air vents extended all the way back to the third row for added passenger comfort.
From a safety perspective, the Carens includes pretensioners and load limiters on seatbelts, dual front seat and side airbags and side impact protection. The ABS option comes with a brake traction control system to allow for maximum control and a rear warning system, unique in this class, provides an audible alert of obstacles when the vehicle is reversing.
"The New Carens features a full range of new and updated features that make it a very competitive vehicle in its class," said Mark Juhn, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Kia Motors Corporation. "The Carens is a key asset in Kia`s European strategy, bringing consumers a full-featured vehicle, manufactured to world-class standards and maintaining Kia`s commitment to exceptional value. We are confident that the New Carens will be a highly successful addition to the Kia stable."
The Carens will be available to European consumers in the second half of the year.
