- 23.5% year on year domestic sales increase led by new Sorento and Carens
- Export market sees 8.3% increase in advance of key strategic models
3 June 2002 - Strong sales of the Sorento premium SUV and the new Carens mini-MPV contributed to record-breaking sales for Kia Motors in May. On the domestic market, sales were up by 23.5% compared to the previous year, reflecting extraordinary demand for the two new vehicles.
The Sorento and the new Carens are expected to be brand leading vehicles in Kia`s export markets when they are released later this year. Even without the two new cars, Kia saw a 2.5% increase in export sales over April and an 8.3% increase over the previous year, selling a total of 49,777 passenger and commercial vehicles outside Korea in May.
The Sorento maintained its position as the number one seller for Kia, with 8,525 units sold. The Carens came in second with 7,161. The Sorento is now the top selling vehicle in the Korean domestic RV market, followed by the new Carens. The Carnival ranks fourth, giving Kia Motors a dominant position in the sector.
Senior executive vice president Mark Juhn, COO of Kia Motors Corporation, said that the strong sales figures put Kia on target to meet year-end sales goals, despite a slightly disappointing first quarter.
"Production issues relating to the new Sorento and a realignment of our distributor network in Europe had a negative impact on our first quarter performance. Our May results give us every reason to be confident that the Sorento and the new Carens will continue to drive the Kia brand forward and allow us to attain our annual sales target when they are released onto the international market later this year."
