- Expected to close year in number one spot
Seoul 12 July 2002 - For the first time, the Carnival/Sedona has passed the Rio as Kia`s top selling export model, selling 6,096 units in June to the Rio`s 4,061. The Rio is still ahead for the year to date, selling 45,246 units to the Carnival`s 44,956. However, the popular MPV is expected to be finish the year as Kia`s number one export.
"The Carnival has been instrumental in raising the status of the Kia brand," says senior executive vice president Mark Juhn, Kia`s chief operating officer. "It has a reputation for quality and value that epitomize everything that Kia stands for."
Indeed, the Sedona has picked up a number of honors, including Best Value MPV, Best Diesel MPV and Best Used Car in the UK. The vehicle became the first Kia vehicle ever to win a Vehicle Safety Score award from U.S. consultancy AutoPacific, when it took top honors in the MPV category earlier this year.
The U.S. version of the vehicle is also the first Kia model to be awarded a blanket five-star safety rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in side, front, rear and offset crash tests.
With an interior and exterior design by Kia designer Jae-kook Song, the Carnival was the first full size MPV to be developed by Kia. First launched in 1999, it was the top selling model for Kia in Korea, before it being overtaken by the new Sorento SUV in April. To date, the Carnival has sold more than 160,000 units on the export market.
