- Best 4x4 in 2003 Diesel Car of the Year awards
- Follows up Carnival/Sedona success in 2002
- Sorento Kia`s top global seller in 2003
Seoul April 29 2003 - The Kia Sorento has won the 4x4 class in the Diesel Car of the Year 2003 awards with the Volvo XC90 D5 as runner-up. These annual awards are produced by the influential Diesel Car magazine in the United Kingdom. The Kia Carnival/Sedona was the best in class MPV in the 2002 honours.
The verdict of Diesel Car after a full road test in the May issue states, "Those who are tempted into the Sorento, probably including many newcomers to the sports utility lifestyle, will quickly appreciate its spaciousness, comfort, refinement and even driving enjoyment, not to mention sheer value for money."
Diesel Car is a specialist consumer motoring magazine writing exclusively about diesel-engined cars. The awardees are chosen in 9 class categories with one overall winner from the best new cars that the magazine has driven over the last twelve months.
"The Sorento has received a great deal of praise from motoring reporters the world over" said Kia Motors` COO Yong-Hwan Kim, head of the international business division.
"This prestigious award in a key European market is further proof that the Sorento can not only compete at the very highest levels; it can rise to the top of the field."
Mr Kim added, "Europe is an important strategic market for Kia and one in which we plan to triple sales by 2005. The diesel engines included in the Sorento, the Carnival/Sedona and the Carens have gone along way toward improving the competitiveness of Kia cars in the sophisticated European market. As we extend our diesel range to include passenger vehicles from next year, a Kia car will become an even more compelling buy."
The Sorento recently became Kia"s top global seller, overtaking the Carnival/Sedona in the first quarter of 2003. In addition to the 2.5 litre common-rail diesel engine, the Sorento comes with a 3.5 or a 2.4 litre gasoline engine. The diesel and 3.5 litre gasoline variants have a choice of manual or automatic transmission.
Kia will launch sixteen new vehicles in the next four years, including 5 diesel powered passenger cars. The extended and upgraded product lineup is a part of Kia`s plan to join the world`s top five automakers by 2010.
