- 4x4 Magazine votes Sorento overall 4x4 of the year
- Ranks above Volvo XC90 and VW Touareg
SEOUL 31 July 2003 - Kia`s popular Sorento SUV has won U.K.-based 4x4 Magazine`s Overall 4x4 of the Year award. The 2.5 litre CRDi diesel car won the Best Large 4x4 category to qualify for the top accolade.
The Kia car was ranked ahead of high-profile newcomers including the Volvo XC90 and the VW Toureg to pick up the award, presented annually by the U.K.`s top specialist 4x4 magazine. It also beat off competition from the Mercedes-Benz ML270, Mitsubishi Shogun Sport, and the Toyota Land Cruiser to win the `Large 4x4` category, before going on to beat six other category winners to win the prestigious `Car of the Year` title.
One 4x4 Magazine judge said of the Sorento, "Everyone was struck by how well designed the Kia is, how well put together it is and most importantly how proficient it is in sticky, tricky off-road situations. Yes, there are those who will be put off by the badge, but...they`re missing out on driving one of the best cars currently found on the market."
Kia Motors COO, Yong-Hwan Kim said, "We are very pleased to have received this award, which demonstrates once again Kia`s belief that great products and great value are not mutually exclusive. The Sorento was benchmarked against the best cars in its segment and this the latest in a list of accolades that it has received. We are confident that customers will look at the Kia brand in a new light as a result."
The Sorento is Kia`s top selling car in 2003, with 82,675 sales worldwide, 44,061 in export markets. It is Kia`s number three export seller, behind the Rio and the Carnival/Sedona.
Kia Motors is currently the fastest growing brand in the UK and throughout Europe.
