- 50,793 export retail sales in July
- Overall exports for month up 86.7% YOY and 47.6% for year
(SEOUL) August 4, 2003 - Kia Motors set an all-time monthly record for export retail sales by selling 50,793 vehicles during the month of July, surpassing the monthly 50,000 retail mark for the first time. The previous record for monthly retail sales abroad was March this year when Kia sold 48,715 vehicles.
Year-on-year export retails were up 17% for July and 11% for the year to date. Overall exports for the month were up 86.7% with 52,946 vehicles sold compared to last year`S 28,355 while total exports for the year were up 47.6% with 419,134 vehicles sold compared to 283,911 in 2002.
These numbers reflect the growing popularity of Kia cars in more and more markets around the world - even setting first-half sales records in Western Europe and Canada - where Kia is currently the fastest growing automaker in the market.
This impressive performance is attributed to Kia`s commitment to producing competitive cars at prices that people can afford. Cars like the Sorento SUV and the Carnival MPV are redefining the concept of value in their segments.
Yong-Hwan Kim, COO of Kia Motors, commented, "kia vehicles are proving themselves to be winners in all markets and our record setting retail performance in July is just the beginning. Riding on this momentum Kia is clearly on track to exceed our business targets for 2003 by a wide margin."
The top five export retail markets in order were the U.S., Canada, Italy, Germany and Spain. The top region for retail sales was North America, followed by Western Europe and the Asia-Pacific.
Top retail sellers for the month were the Rio small car with 11,336 units followed by the award wining Carnival/Sedona MPV at 10,541 and the brand-leading Sorento SUV with 7,594 units sold.
