- Agreement extended to worldwide sponsorship
SEOUL 4 February 2004 ? Kia Motors has reached an agreement with the International Tennis Federation (ITF), owners and organizers of Davis Cup by BNP Paribas, to reinforce the company’s existing sponsorship.
Kia Motors began sponsoring Davis Cup ? the largest annual international team competition in sport ? in 2003. The original agreement covered ties in the Europe-Africa zones.
The new agreement will extend the relationship between Kia and the ITF to cover global sponsorship of this major competition. From the first round of 2004 commencing this week, Kia will be the Official Car of the entire competition.
Kia Motors COO Yong-Hwan Kim said, “The extension of our agreement with the ITF represents another step in aligning the Kia brand with the sport of tennis. With two new cars, the Picanto and the Cerato, arriving on the market in the first half of 2004, Kia is establishing itself as a young, sporty, friendly and active brand. Tennis perfectly matches these brand attributes.”
He added, “Davis Cup is a unique event with a history stretching back to 1900. It is the combination of innovation and tradition that gives Davis Cup its appeal and makes it a perfect match for the Kia brand. We are particularly pleased to be able to strengthen our ties to Davis Cup in 2004, a year coinciding with the sixtieth anniversary of Kia’s establishment.”
ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti said, “We have developed a solid relationship with Kia Motors over the past year and we are excited about the opportunity to build further on that relationship. Kia is a company that shares our passion for tennis and I am confident that the company will make an important contribution to the success of Davis Cup and to the sport as a whole.”
The 2004 Davis Cup begins on February 6, with 24 matches played around the world over 3 days. The quarterfinals of the World Group will be played from 09-11 April, the semifinals from 24-26 September and the final from 03-05 December.
