- Kia sales rise by 121% year-on-year in October
- Kia Picanto best-selling imported car in September
(SEOUL) November 16, 2004 -- Kia Motors Corporation today announced that skyrocketing demand in Taiwan has resulted in a 121.1% year-on-year increase in sales for the month of October, making it the fastest-growing car maker in the country for the month. Cumulatively, through the first ten months of the year, Kia has sold 3,844 vehicles, positioning itself as the second fastest-growing auto brand in the Taiwanese passenger car market.
The driving force behind this impressive growth has been the A-class Picanto (sold in Taiwan as the ‘EuroStar’), which has recorded 1,835 units of sales between April and October of this year. In September alone, 340 Picantos were sold, surpassing the Mercedes Benz E-Class as the best-selling imported car.
“When it was introduced last April, the Picanto’s stylish European design received immediate attention from the Taiwanese, particularly young consumers,” said Yong-Hwan Kim, Senior Executive Vice Present & COO of Kia Motors. “Now Picanto’s accelerating sales momentum is driving Kia forward in Taiwan’s passenger car market.”
In addition to adopting the name EuroStar to underscore the car’s European design characteristics, the immensely popular Taiwanese singing trio S.H.E. is featured in product advertisements to appeal to younger customers.
Kia is also using famous local entertainers to promote its other popular models such as the Carnival MPV and Carens-II compact MPV.
“Our local Taiwanese distributor was the first of Kia’s worldwide network of distributors to complete conversion to our new corporate identity, which will further strengthen the Kia brand in Taiwan -- a highly strategic market in the region whose automotive trends have great influence not only on neighboring China, but also on many Southeast Asian markets,” added Mr. Kim.
Founded in 1944 and now celebrating its 60th anniversary, Kia Motors Corporation (www.kiamotors.com) is Korea’s oldest manufacturer of automobiles. As part of the Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group, Kia is among the world’s fastest growing automobile companies and aims to be a leading global automaker. Kia’s 15 manufacturing and assembly operations in 12 countries make more than a million vehicles a year that are sold and serviced through a network of distributors and dealers covering 190 countries. Kia today has 30,000 employees and annual revenues of $12 billion. It is the major sponsor of the Australian Tennis Open and an international sponsor of the Davis Cup.
