- Can ensure optimal steering performance and established a stable foundation for the supply of parts for finished vehicles
- Anticipating that these parts will replace imports amounting to an annual 60 billion won
Hyundai Mobis (www.mobis.co.kr; CEO: Han Kyu-hwan), which is boosting synergy effects of module parts by strengthening the manufacturing of various key parts, became the first in Korea to succeed in the localization of the ECU and optical sensor. These are key parts of the MDPS (Motor Driven Power Steering), which is a cutting-edge motor-driven steering device.
The ECU and optical sensor are installed on the inner side of the handle and perform the role of controlling motor movements and adjusting the steering angle according to the speed of the vehicle. They are key parts that determine the performance and price of the MDPS.
The MDPS is a next-generation, cutting-edge steering device that considerably improves fuel efficiency by using an electric motor. It is a device that greatly contributes to safe driving by giving the driver optimal control of the handle according to driving conditions and speed.
By localizing the ECU and optical sensor of MDPS, Hyundai Mobis will be able to secure price competitiveness; minimize risks that arise from foreign exchange rate fluctuations; and establish a stable foundation for supplying key parts. The company is anticipating that the effect of replacing imports will be worth an annual 60 billion won.
Moreover, Hyundai Mobis automated all ECU production lines to ensure top quality. By so doing, the company can minimize errors in the production process and identify, in real time, in which process a problem occurred when it is detected through the bar code tracking and management system.
To prevent static electricity, which can cause fatal damage to quality, the company installed a static electricity removal device at key processes and made it mandatory for all workers to wear anti-static suits. The company is thus making strenuous efforts to ensure top-quality in its processes.
In terms of the assembly line of the optical sensor, which is a key part along with the ECU, an error proof system has been adopted for all of the 28 processes, thereby completing preventing the production of defective products.
By setting up a “clean room” that is almost the same as a semiconductor production facility, the company is maintaining a consistent temperature and humidity level in an optimally clean environment. It is strengthening the production of top-quality MDPS based on performance inspections at a high temperature of 80 degrees Celsius or more.
Hyundai Mobis is operating an MDPS production plant which produces 800 thousand units a year in Poseung, Gyeonggi Province. It is providing the part for the new Avante XD, i30, and cee’d. It is planning to expand the number of vehicles to which this part is supplied to, such as the models succeeding the Verna and the Cerato.
