While HMG contributed to modernizing and industrializing Korea before the 2000s, the Group expanded its presence globally by leveraging ‘Quality Management’ and ‘Localization’ strategies in the 2000s. In the 2010s, the Group reshuffled global market strategies by riding the wave of newly emerging Korea along with the Korean Wave 2.0 and then focused on brand philosophy. In 2020, a paradigm shift in daily lives triggered by the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the COVID-19 pandemic laid out the clear road map on where to go: People and Environment.
HMG, which was mindful of how people enjoy peaceful and safe lives and diligently paved the way for turning dreams into reality with unshakable determination, continuously sought to find solutions to climate change.
In 2020, HMG significantly shifted the EV production paradigm by introducing the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the first electric-only dedicated platform which was capable of simultaneously and quickly charging 400•800V. The Group therefore was away from an internal combustion engine era and transformed itself as a first mover rather than a fast follower in preparation for a greener future mobility landscape.
E-GMP
The E-GMP is a dedicated electric vehicle platform independently developed by HMG for a next-generation EV line-up. Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60 are built on the E-GMP platform.
With the aim of achieving carbon neutrality, HMG studies nature in search for new energy sources and materials and explores the new possibility of iron which circulates continuously after recycling. A series of hydrogen projects are underway so that hydrogen can be produced from the by-product gas generated when producing iron, and clean hydrogen energy can spread not only to transportation but also throughout society and industry. With the launch of ‘HTWO’, a new brand to represent the Group’s world-leading hydrogen fuel cell system in 2020, followed by the 'Hydrogen Wave' forum in 2021, the blueprint has been unveiled and then implemented. The blueprint is about expanding businesses to all areas of the hydrogen value chain such as its production, storage, transportation, and supply.
The word of ‘revolution’ is no longer unfamiliar. In the fast-evolving era, HMG doesn’t hesitate to adopt changes and then move toward the future: an unhindered journey in order to stand out at the center of evolving future mobility instead of existing automobiles. HMG plans to deliver unconventional mobility and living spaces with Urban Air Mobility (UAM), and Purpose-Built Vehicle (PBV) which provides the tailored mobility services.
A variety of intelligent transportation means help create a fast and safe traffic environment by exchanging information with a wide range of systems and incorporate smart technologies that communicate with people in daily lives. Robots that help human lives in areas of production sites, transportations, medical cares, and services will develop industries and upgrade lives. That’s why the Group established an autonomous driving company ‘Motional’ in 2020, took over a robotics design company ‘Boston Dynamics’, and found US UAM subsidiary 'Supernal' in 2021.
Hyundai Motor Group, a global automaker that manufactures vehicles in the traditional sense, enables people to lead a peaceful life by manufacturing all rideable and movable vehicles and establishing a platform for their services.
Future Growth Engines
On Oct 14th, the Group’s ultimate mission was defined as ‘contributing to human life and happiness, progress and development’. And four major business areas such as robotics, UAM (Urban Air Mobility), autonomous driving and hydrogen fuel cell system were adopted to secure a future growth engine.
