Voice Recognition, Listens Carefully and Makes Sense

Voice recognition in a running car is not an easy task. Even more so because safety hinges on it.
However, voice recognition itself can be handy and enhance the driving experience dramatically.
Hyundai Motor Group is developing the voice recognition technology that actually works in the demanding environment of a car.

Voice recognition in a car happens in two steps.

The first step is to recognize the voice at the first attempt in an accurate manner regardless of the noise from the surroundings.
The second step is to minimize the steps of interaction with the user in consideration of the driving circumstances and safety.

Intelligent voice recognition has been developed for the subsequence stage after the initial recognition, with a view to minimize the interaction steps with the user. If the user tries to use features such as making a phone call or setting the destination, the history of use in the vehicle is used as the basis to anticipate the intent of the driver, reducing the number of steps for interaction from the previous two to three steps to only one step. Or, when there are many options to choose from, the number of suggested options are reduced before the suggestion is made.
Hyundai Motor Group is using the ‘barge-in’ and ‘intelligence voice recognition’ technology to overcome the limits of the in-vehicle voice recognition.

  • Barge-in The voice recognition barge-in technology is a technology to ensure the voice commands are recognized even while the system is playing a guiding message or providing sound effects.
    The voice commands from the user are input along with the eco signals, and the barge-in technology removes the eco elements and leaves the voice commands only, which is then passed on to the voice recognition engine. This is followed by the post-processing module that removes the remaining eco signals and corrects the signal bias generated during the eco-removal process.

  • Intelligent Voice Recognition The intelligent voice recognition service is a system that understands the intent behind the commands of the users and processes it. That is, the system understands the natural language spoken by the driver and provides a context-relevant answer by understanding the context of the dialogue.
    The intelligent voice recognition service of Hyundai Motor Group aims to provide various services through generation of relevant replies after understanding the voice commands of the users.
