Every April, Milan, Italy, is filled with vibrancy and bustle. This is because the entire city transforms into a massive design exhibition. During ‘Milan Design Week’, when hundreds of exhibitions—from small showrooms tucked away in alleys to grand galleries—take place simultaneously, creative minds from around the world converge. The streets overflow with striking posters and installations, and the entire city buzzes with non-stop activity as designers and visitors flock in from every corner of the globe.
Amid the countless exhibitions held from April 20 to 26, Kia once again demonstrated its unique presence. Kia has participated in Milan Design Week for four consecutive years, continuously evolving and expressing its design philosophy. While it is no longer unusual for an automotive brand to participate in a design festival, Kia’s exhibitions are highly regarded not only as a showcase of technical achievements, but as a platform for sharing the values the brand aspires to.
Now in its 64th year, Milan Design Week is the world’s largest design festival. As a convergence of cultural trends spanning architecture, fashion, IT, and automotive design, it has long established itself as a platform that goes beyond a mere industry event to set the direction for global design. This is precisely why Kia chooses to participate in Milan. The goal is to go beyond simply unveiling products and instead intersect the brand’s worldview and aesthetic approach with the creative energy of the world.
Since 2023, Kia has participated in Milan Design Week for four consecutive years under its design philosophy, ‘Opposites United’, consistently building a reputation as a ‘brand deeply committed to design’ by presenting increasingly refined themes and concepts each year. In essence, the brand has utilized this platform not as a one-off event, but as a means to put its long-term philosophy into practice. This year’s theme, ‘Resonance of Opposites’, is not simply placing contrasting concepts side by side, but a journey to explore the new value created when opposing concepts resonate with one another. Kia translates this abstract concept into the language of the senses through dual exhibition spaces with distinct characters.
Kia’s first journey begins at the art gallery ‘Museo della Permanente’, located in the heart of Milan. Built in the late 19th century, this historic museum is renowned for its thick stone walls and high ceilings. In this historic venue, where the weighty atmosphere characteristic of an old building permeates the entire space, Kia presented an art exhibition centered on the concept of ‘Journey of Reflection’. The exhibition unfolds the three cultural characteristics of Kia’s design philosophy—Cultural Vanguard, Creative Risk-Takers, and Relentless Innovators —as a single journey. The sight of modern light and sound installations nestled within the antique art museum felt like a visual declaration of ‘Opposites United’.
Here, visitors are invited into the inner world of Kia Design through three interconnected spaces. While each space is independent, they are connected by a single flow; as visitors follow the path, they sequentially experience the essence of design as presented by Kia. In this space, ‘design’ is not something that is explained, but rather a sensation experienced through the acts of gazing, daring, and musing.
The keyword for the first space, ‘Culture Vanguard’, is Gaze. A dynamic light installation fills the space with continuously shifting waves of color, inviting visitors to observe and reflect as overlapping streams of light symbolize how diverse perspectives come together to shape new culture. At the center, light represents creative energy, while the surrounding elements reveal distinct cultural meanings through reflection and refraction. This exhibition expresses the idea that gazing is not merely seeing, but a process of reading the world and capturing new possibilities.
The keyword for the second space, ‘Creative Risk-Takers’, is Dare. Visitors move through narrow canyon-like pathways, choosing their own direction along the way. Structures known as the ‘Hills of Inspiration’ sometimes block the path, while at other moments opening unexpected routes forward, encouraging active exploration and personal choice. Even if you're not sure where you're going, all you have to do is take a step with courage. The act of embracing uncertainty and stepping into the unknown reflects the essence of Kia Design’s philosophy of creative risk-taking and bold exploration.
The final space, ‘Relentless Innovators’, is a tranquil space for Muse. With an atmosphere entirely different from the previous two spaces, visitors sit in a circle within the serene, cavernous space, filled with monumental sound and slowly shifting light. The atmosphere is neither chaotic nor completely silent. Here, visitors could vividly experience the process by which long-held thoughts transform into light and expand into continuous innovation.
Moving on to the second exhibition hall, the Salone dei Tessuti, the atmosphere shifted dramatically. Under the theme ‘Journey of Projection’, the exhibition presented how the inner reflection explored in the previous space takes tangible form through product design, revealing both the essence of Kia’s design philosophy and the brand’s vision for future mobility.
A total of six EV concept cars were unveiled, each defined by a distinct keyword representing a stage in Kia’s evolving design journey. EV2 represents ‘Begin’, signifying not a grand declaration but the smallest and simplest first step; EV3 represents ‘Explore’, expanding technological innovation into everyday life and rediscovering the familiar through new perspectives. EV4 represents ‘Create’, meaning to harmonize technology and form by constantly questioning conventions — forging new possibilities.
Following this, EV5 embodies ‘Connect’, signifying that mobility transcends mere function to become a medium linking people, nature, space, and emotion. Under the keyword ‘Embrace’, EV9 presents a vision of true abundance and a greater sense of connection rooted not in ownership, but in embracing others. Rather than serving as a simple introduction to Kia’s lineup, the six vehicles lined up side by side felt more like a journey toward the future of mobility envisioned by Kia.
Among them, what drew the most attention was undoubtedly the Vision Meta Turismo, which embodies the message that “the future is not something to predict, but something to imagine.” Following its first reveal at Kia’s 80th anniversary celebration in Korea last year, the concept made its global debut at Milan Design Week, presenting Kia’s future vision of mobility in its clearest form yet. Inspired by the elegant silhouettes of 1960s long-distance touring cars and the aerodynamic canard structures of jet aircraft, the design combines geometric precision with a fluid, dynamic silhouette. Balancing sharpness with a sense of solidity, the exterior reveals different expressions depending on the viewing angle, offering a refined yet confident interpretation of Kia’s vision for the future of mobility.
In addition to the two exhibitions, Kia also hosted a series of talk programs and live performances centered around its ‘Opposites United’ philosophy throughout the event. Spanning five days, the talks explored themes far beyond the automobile itself — from designing everyday life as a poetic yet critical act, to examining material culture and human agency, methodologies as living systems, and realist portraits capturing the relationships and memories shared between land, community, and ecology. Designers, photographers, and creatives from various disciplines took the stage to discuss the broader cultural and philosophical contexts surrounding design. The program offered a glimpse into the depth of thought underpinning Kia’s design philosophy and the expansive intellectual framework behind it.
Karim Habib, Executive Vice President and Head of Kia Global Design, commented during the event, “‘Resonance of Opposites’ is more than an exhibition theme; it marks a milestone in our journey,” adding that it “reflects our commitment to shaping a more sustainable future through curiosity and continuous innovation.” Looking at Kia’s continued presence in Milan over the past four years, those words feel far from symbolic. Since redefining its brand identity in 2021, Kia has consistently communicated its ‘Opposites United’ philosophy through major global events and exhibitions. Models shaped by this philosophy — including the EV9, EV6, and PV5 — have gone on to earn major international design awards and prestigious ‘Car of the Year’ honors, demonstrating tangible global success.
“Two exhibitions, one design philosophy.” If there was one phrase that encapsulated Kia’s presence at Milan Design Week 2026, it would be this. Through immersive artworks reflecting inner contemplation and concept vehicles presenting a vision for the future, Kia offered a clear expression of the direction it seeks to pursue. The era of the automotive brand is evolving. Promising simply a “better car” is no longer enough. What Kia demonstrated in Milan was not merely a vision for mobility, but a broader perspective on the way we live — a philosophical proposal for the future of mobility itself.
Over the past four years, Kia has continuously explored and expanded its ‘Opposites United’ design philosophy through Milan Design Week. The message accumulated throughout this journey is now entering its next chapter, which, once again, begins here in Milan.
