The global leaders in the electric vehicle industry from both academia and industry gathered for the 37th International Electric Vehicle Symposium & Exhibition (EVS37), often dubbed the "Olympics of Electric Vehicles." Under the theme "Electric Waves to Future Mobility," EVS37 presented megatrends in electric vehicle technology while offering insights into the future of mobility.
Hyundai Motor Group made a significant impact at EVS37, showcasing key technologies that predict the direction of the rapidly evolving automotive industry. Hyundai Mobis introduced the 'Mobion' to Korea for the first time, and Hyundai Kefico presented integrated vehicle and power conversion technologies, ultra-fast EV chargers, and automatic charging technologies, offering new mobility solutions.
EVS is a gathering where leaders in the global automotive and electric vehicle industry, as well as electric vehicle experts, come together to present the direction of future mobility and discuss current issues. It also features a large-scale electric vehicle exhibition, drawing significant attention from the global automotive industry.
EVS boasts over 50 years of history and tradition. It began in 1969 in Phoenix, USA, and has since expanded to Europe, including Germany, France, Italy, and Belgium, as well as Asia, including Korea, China, Japan, and Hong Kong, solidifying its status as the global electric vehicle Olympics. EVS is held annually, rotating among continents with regional electric vehicle associations in Asia, Europe, and North America.
The 37th EVS, hosted by the World Electric Vehicle Association (WEVA) and the Electric Vehicle Association of Asia Pacific (EVAAP) and organized by the Korean Society of Automotive Engineers (KSAE), took place over four days from April 23 at COEX in Seoul. This was the third time EVS was held in Korea, following events in 2002 and 2015. EVS37, aligned with the theme ‘Electric Waves to Future Mobility,’ showcased various innovative electric vehicle technologies and presented the direction of future mobility.
A total of 20,000 visitors from 49 countries attended EVS37. Over 200 global companies from Europe, Asia, and the Americas participated, setting up 600 booths, making it the largest event in its history. The academic conference was also significant, with 1,500 electric vehicle experts from 60 countries submitting 500 papers, surpassing the scale of EVS36 held in California in 2023.
At EVS37, the people eager to learn about the trends in electric vehicles was unending. Hyundai Motor Group's exhibition area, in particular, attracted a multitude of spectators. Hyundai showcased the Transparent Solar Film and the new Ioniq 5, which has set a monumental milestone in the era of electrified mobility. Additionally, Kia presented various models of PBVs (Purpose-Built Vehicles), demonstrating the potential for new mobility experiences in the future.
The Transparent Solar Film displayed by Hyundai garnered significant attention. This film, utilizing Perovskite material known for its excellent electrical and optical properties, features 50% transparency and 10% cell efficiency in a 1.5kW transparent film. When applied to a vehicle's sunroof, the Transparent Solar Film can generate electricity without additional equipment, and it can also be attached to building exteriors or windows, functioning with indoor lighting. At the exhibition booth, visitors could witness the film powering LED lamps, experiencing its superior performance.
Kia presented the PV5, indicating the direction of future mobility. The PV5 is a central model in Kia's PBV family, notable for its versatility in various applications. At EVS, Kia displayed a 1:3 scale model of the PV5 Chassis Cab, demonstrating the Easy Swap technology that allows the rear module to be completely replaced, excluding the driving space. This technology enables the application of three different modules: panel van, cargo, and passenger, showcasing the extensive versatility of PBVs to the visitors.
Hyundai Mobis generated significant buzz at EVS37, introducing Mobion, a next-generation electrification technology concept model, to Korea for the first time. First unveiled at CES 2024, Mobion features the e-Corner system, representing next-generation electric vehicle driving technology. The debut at CES 2024 saw over 10,000 visitors to the Hyundai Mobis booth on the first day alone.
At EVS37, Hyundai Mobis showcased Mobion's innovative movements, including crab driving (moving sideways) by turning all four wheels 90 degrees and zero-turn (rotating 360 degrees on the spot). These demonstrations captivated the audience.
Hyundai Mobis explained the core technologies enabling Mobion’s innovative movements, including the in-wheel system and e-Corner system. The in-wheel system features motors installed directly on each wheel, providing optimal maneuverability and vehicle posture control without the need for separate components like drive shafts, thus improving driving efficiency and energy efficiency.
The e-Corner system, another key technology, integrates driving, braking, steering, and suspension systems into each wheel. This enables unique movements like crab driving and zero-turn. The system combines in-wheel motors, electronic brakes, electric steering, and dampers. The motors drive the wheels, the electric steering changes direction, and the brakes and dampers manage speed and absorb shocks.
Additionally, Hyundai Mobis showcased various next-generation electrification technologies, such as the EDU 3-in-1 (Electric Drive Unit), which integrates the electric motor, inverter, and reducer, and the BSA (Battery System Assembly), which combines the EV battery pack with cooling and power cut-off systems. These innovative technologies from Hyundai Mobis will soon be part of the future mobility experience.
Hyundai Kefico introduced key electrification technologies, including vehicle integration, power conversion, charging control, ultra-fast charging, and automatic charging, offering EV charging and energy management solutions. The Hyundai Kefico booth featured the 'ALL Control Solution Zone,' 'Ultra-fast EV Charge Zone,' and 'Autonomous Charge Zone,' providing a variety of exhibits.
Visitors were first greeted by models demonstrating electric vehicle systems. The centralized vehicle domain controller, charging management system (VCMS), power conversion system (OBC, LDC, V2LC), and battery management system (BMS) showcased Hyundai Kefico’s expertise in electric vehicle core control components.
Hyundai Kefico also introduced fast and ultra-fast chargers designed for the electrification era, hinting at changes in the EV charging environment. The highlight was the 360kW ultra-fast charger. Hyundai Kefico’s ultra-fast charger features a separate power bank. Depending on the number of chargers, the power bank's capacity varies, with a single charger configuration including one 240kW and one 120kW power bank. A dual charger configuration includes three 240kW power banks.
In response to diverse charging environments, Hyundai Kefico showcased chargers with adjustable charging speeds. These chargers support fast charging from 100kW to ultra-fast charging at 200kW, with a power bank separated type for easy expansion. For instance, when two vehicles are charging, each charges at 100kW, but when only one vehicle is charging, it switches to 200kW ultra-fast mode.
They also introduced a high-speed economic charger with Plug and Charge (PnC) technology, enabling seamless authentication, charging, and payment. This charger is based on Hyundai’s EV Charging Technology Platform (E-CTP) and features a 24-inch screen and a pivot arm cable for enhanced user convenience.
Hyundai Kefico also featured automatic charging technology designed to reduce the hassle of charging. This technology involves a robot approaching the vehicle and connecting the charger when the car is parked in a designated spot. Upon completion of charging, the robot disconnects the charger and moves to another vehicle needing charging. The robot is equipped with cameras and sensors to accurately locate the charging port.
EVS is not merely an exhibition of electric vehicle technologies but a symposium for discussing and sharing the direction of future mobility. The EVS37 academic conference comprised the EV Tech Summit and electric vehicle-related paper presentations. Researchers from Hyundai Motor Group presented their achievements and shared information on various fields related to electric vehicles, attracting global academic and industrial attention.
The EV Tech Summit featured three main topics. The first was ‘Understanding EV Li-ion battery thermal runaway and mitigation strategies,’ which covered the basics of lithium-ion batteries, cell design, and the root causes of abnormal temperature rises and fires.
The second topic, ‘A path to a sustainable industry in a software defined world,’ featured discussions with Dr. Kyungmin Lee from Hyundai Motor Company on architecture development for successful SDV transitions, new value creation, and software-centric development. The final topic was ‘Next Generation of Solid-state Batteries,’ where participants discussed new perspectives for accelerating solid-state battery innovations, including electrolytes, anode-free designs, and isostatic pressing methods.
Numerous paper presentations on various topics followed, including electric vehicle components, policies, regulations, control, and batteries. Hyundai Mobis stood out with the most presentations among participating companies, covering extensive research areas like electric drive systems, batteries, safety components, platforms, and infotainment. Papers on optimal cooling design for EV motors, vehicle control on low-friction roads, separation and heat dissipation structures for vehicle computers, and utilizing rear-wheel steering in electric vehicles were also presented, exploring the current and future states of future mobility.
EVS serves as a milestone, presenting the current status and future direction of the automotive industry. By unveiling new technologies, sharing research achievements, and proposing new mobility solutions, EVS helps humanity take a step closer to the future. Hyundai Motor Group continues this journey, consistently developing innovative technologies to provide new mobility experiences and enhance user convenience. The future brought by EVS and Hyundai Motor Group is eagerly anticipated.
