N Archive: A Living Record of Hyundai N’s Decade—Long Journey

From race cars that have challenged tracks worldwide to concept cars that stand as singular works of art—welcome to the N Archive, where every chapter of Hyundai N’s story converges.
In just two days, all admission tickets for two months sold out. More than a simple archive, it has evolved into a vibrant museum of living history, uniting the past, present, and future of Hyundai N.

The year 2025 marks a significant milestone—the 10th anniversary of Hyundai N. Since its launch in 2015, Hyundai N has captured the hearts of driving enthusiasts with high-performance cars that embody motorsport DNA and the pure joy of driving at their core.

N Archive

It is obvious that the future is rooted in the past. The journey of Hyundai N is not just a record but a living history written by its fans and owners together. To preserve the past decade and envision the next, Hyundai N began planning the N Archive in 2023. Officially opened on September 19, the N Archive offers a chance to look back on the brand’s journey and preview the road ahead. Let us now step into the decade of challenges that have shaped Hyundai N.

A Decade of Hyundai N, Part 1 — The Beginning and Motorsport Roots

The N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo (below) and the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center in Nürburgring, Germany—where Hyundai N began.

Hyundai N made its first public appearance at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show through the N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo, a concept that envisioned the brand’s next decade. The name “N” originates from the initials of Hyundai Motor’s Namyang R&D Center in Korea and Germany’s Nürburgring circuit—the notorious “Green Hell,” serving as the birthplace and proving ground of Hyundai N, respectively. Its logo takes inspiration from the chicane, the signature S-shaped curve that embodies the brand’s spirit on both road and track.

While Hyundai N officially made its debut in 2015, its story began in 2012 with the formation of a small research team at the Namyang R&D Center dedicated to developing high-performance vehicles. Comprising engineers and developers who shared a deep passion for cars and driving, the team set out to bring to life the kind of high-performance machine they had always envisioned.

Hyundai i20 WRC

In late 2012, Hyundai Motor unveiled the i20 WRC concept car at the Paris Motor Show, marking its entry into the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), one of the premier stages in global motorsport. The company subsequently established Hyundai Motorsport GmbH (HMSG) in Europe and, at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, presented an enhanced i20 WRC featuring improved cooling, suspension, chassis rigidity, and aerodynamics.

Hyundai N entered the world of racing in earnest with the i20 WRC and quickly became a sensation. In 2014, Thierry Neuville of the Hyundai World Rally Team suffered a serious crash during practice, rolling his car seven and a half times down a vineyard hill. Yet through extraordinary teamwork, the crew rebuilt the car overnight, enabling him to return to the rally and ultimately claim victory. It was at that moment that Hyundai N’s indomitable spirit—overcoming adversity and never giving up—first came to life.

In its debut season at the 2014 WRC, the Hyundai World Rally Team achieved three podium finishes, including a double podium, securing fourth place in the overall standings. The momentum continued into 2015, when the team once again claimed three podiums with another double finish, climbing to third in the championship. Then, in 2019—just five years after entering the WRC—Hyundai etched its name in history by capturing the Manufacturers’ Championship title.

From 2016, Hyundai N expanded its scope to the Nürburgring 24 Hours, one of the world’s toughest endurance races. Held on Germany’s Nürburgring circuit, famously nicknamed the “Green Hell,” the race challenges drivers to compete for 24 continuous hours on a 25-kilometer course with 300 meters of elevation change and around 170 corners.

The Nürburgring 24 Hours pushes both machines and drivers to their limits, with nearly 40 percent of participants forced to retire before the finish. Hyundai N, however, completed the race in its debut year and has since achieved ten consecutive starts and finishes—along with five consecutive TCR class victories. The historic race cars that made their mark at the Nürburgring can now be seen here at the N Archive.

Hyundai N Festival

Through outstanding performances in various competitions, Hyundai N has firmly established the names “Hyundai” and “N” on the global motorsport stage. At home, the brand has been expanding the base of grassroots motorsport by hosting Korea’s largest one-make racing event, the Hyundai N Festival. In 2024, participation grew to 129 drivers—49 more than in 2023—and total attendance exceeded 35,000.

A Decade of Hyundai N, Part 2 — Rolling Labs and the Expanding Line-Up

Building on the expertise gained through motorsport, Hyundai N has developed test cars that allow research, development, and verification of high-performance technologies under real driving conditions. These laboratories on wheels, known as “Rolling Labs,” are now showcased at the N Archive, where the entire lineup can be seen.

Starting with the lightweight, high-performance, mid-engine Rolling Lab RM14 unveiled in 2014, the N Archive houses every successor that followed—the RM15, the RM20e, an electrified high-performance Rolling Lab based on the Veloster N ETCR, and the N Vision 74, a hydrogen-electric hybrid developed to carry the joy of driving into the future of electrification. Perhaps one day, we will once again see these meticulously restored Rolling Lab models come to life on the track.

Mass Production cars of Hyundai N

The high-performance technologies refined through motorsport experience and perfected in the Rolling Lab have been applied to every mass-production N model. Starting with the i30 N in 2017, Hyundai N rapidly expanded its lineup—the Veloster N and i30 Fastback N in 2018, followed by the Kona N and Elantra N in 2021—capturing the hearts of driving enthusiasts around the world.

IONIQ 5 N and IONIQ 6 N

Pushing forward, Hyundai N opened a new chapter in high-performance electrification with the unveiling of the IONIQ 5 N in 2023. The brand also introduced a series of special editions, including the Drift Spec and TA (Time Attack) Spec models—machines that have delivered outstanding performances at world-class automotive festivals and motorsport events.

Following its spectacular debut, the IONIQ 5 N has gained global recognition for its exceptional performance and refinement. It was named Car of the Year at the 2023 TopGear.com Awards and World Performance Car at the 2024 World Car Awards, underscoring its excellence on the world stage.

This past July, Hyundai N made the global debut of its second high-performance EV, the IONIQ 6 N, at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. The event also showcased a lineup of iconic models that have defined Hyundai N’s history, each taking on the legendary Goodwood Hillclimb and captivating spectators from around the world. With a decade of innovation behind it, Hyundai N is poised to continue redefining the future of high-performance electric mobility.

Where Ten Years of History Live — The N Archive

N Archive

All the stories of challenge and innovation that define Hyundai N are carefully preserved within the N Archive. Located in Uiwang, Gyeonggi Province, the 1,320-square-meter facility can accommodate up to 100 vehicles and is accented throughout with Hyundai N’s signature Performance Blue. It is divided into four zones dedicated to vehicle storage, maintenance, and parts preservation.

N Archive

The N Archive brings together every vehicle Hyundai N has created and developed—from motorsport race cars that have competed in global series such as WRC and TCR to Rolling Lab models, custom cars, and production N vehicles. Its mission is to preserve Hyundai N’s heritage and strengthen its identity as a high-performance brand for generations to come.

N Archive

Inside the N Archive are not only race cars that once competed on real circuits, but also one-of-a-kind Rolling Lab models found nowhere else. Yet it serves as far more than a storage facility for retired vehicles. Beyond simply housing cars and parts, every vehicle in the N Archive is carefully preserved to remain drivable for years to come, with maintenance performed in the facility’s dedicated service area. Around 50 vehicles are currently stored here, and as more Hyundai N models join, the N Archive will continue to evolve as a defining symbol of the brand.

A Decade in Motion — Hyundai N’s 10th Anniversary Celebration

IONIQ 6 N Drift Spec

On September 19, the N Archive officially opened its doors with a special event celebrating the 10th anniversary of Hyundai N. The celebration brought together media representatives, influencers, customers, and Hyundai employees from various divisions who have supported N’s journey over the years. We visited the N Archive to experience the excitement and energy of the occasion firsthand.

At the entrance of the N Archive stood three symbolic models: the soon-to-be-released IONIQ 6 N; the IONIQ 6 N Drift Spec, which made a spectacular debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with its electrifying performance; and the RN22e Rolling Lab, which served as the foundation for both. The RN22e played a pivotal role in refining the advanced performance technologies that gave rise to the IONIQ 6 N and ultimately the Drift Spec, developed to push the limits of electric drift performance.

After a warm welcome from these extraordinary cars, the exhibition began with a message zone where visitors could leave notes of support for Hyundai N, alongside a display of various merchandise previously showcased at the pop-up event held at The Hyundai Seoul in August. The space was filled with items certain to capture the heart of any N enthusiast.

Further inside, a special IONIQ 6 N equipped with N Performance Parts was on display. The exhibit offered visitors a close look at exclusive enhancements that make the model even more distinctive and powerful—capturing the attention of many prospective customers. The car was also set to an exhibition mode that allowed guests to experience key features such as Launch Control, N e-Shift, and N Active Sound+ from the driver’s seat, with lines forming for a chance to try it firsthand.

Hyundai Motor Executives Presented, Spectators Look Listening

A special presentation followed, reflecting on Hyundai N’s ten-year history and outlining its vision for the future. The faces of the attendees—genuine N enthusiasts—were filled with excitement and joy as they witnessed firsthand how their beloved N models were developed and what achievements they had made in motorsport. The attending media shared their thoughts on the occasion:

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Hyundai N

“It was a meaningful experience to see Hyundai N’s ten-year history brought together in one place. The N Archive, designed with the atmosphere of a converted airplane hangar, felt refreshingly unique, and the exhibition layout—featuring race cars, Rolling Labs, and production models displayed in chronological order—made it feel like walking through a living museum.”

“The video and presentation that condensed Hyundai N’s journey into a powerful story were particularly impressive. Rather than simply reflecting on the past or celebrating its anniversary, the event also presented a vision for the era of electrification, inspiring even greater anticipation for the next decade.”

A number of Hyundai N owners and club members attended the event, sharing lively and diverse feedback that reflected their genuine passion for the brand.

“I really enjoyed how it felt like the brand and its fans were breathing together as one. I didn’t feel like I was just watching the event—it truly felt like I was part of it, and that made the experience even more engaging.”

“It felt more like a festival than a ceremony. Maybe because it was the 10th anniversary, everything about the program felt new and special. I really hope events like this continue—and I’d love to be part of it again ten years from now.”

Visitors to the N Archive on a docent tour

After the presentations concluded, visitors were invited to join an in-depth guided tour offering detailed insights into Hyundai N’s history and vehicles. Professional docents shared engaging stories, and these tours will continue every weekend through the end of the year for guests with reservations. With themed exhibitions rotating monthly—from race cars that have dominated WRC and TCR stages to Rolling Lab models pushing the boundaries of technology—the N Archive is certain to keep attracting passionate visitors.

Hero of the Month — i20 Coupe WRC

At the center of the event venue stood the Hero Zone, featuring a special lineup of exhibition vehicles. Each month, the N Archive will highlight a different theme—from WRC and TCR race cars to Rolling Lab models. This month’s featured model is the i20 Coupe WRC, the legendary machine that delivered Hyundai N its first overall victory in the World Rally Championship.

i20 Coupe WRC

In 2018, Hyundai N’s title hopes slipped away after Thierry Neuville’s unfortunate accident. However, the team came back stronger the following year, capturing the WRC Manufacturers’ title with an overwhelming performance—just four years after joining the competition. With another consecutive title in 2020, the i20 Coupe WRC became a true milestone for the brand. Visitors on the docent tour can see this very machine up close—the car that defined an era for Hyundai N.

Visitors to the 10th Anniversary of Hyundai N

Driven by true car enthusiasts, Hyundai N strives to share the joy of driving with even more customers. The N Archive is not merely a museum preserving the past. While it currently brings together all of Hyundai N’s historic vehicles under one roof, future plans aim to restore each model to its original running condition. In line with Hyundai N’s spirit of driving pleasure and creativity, the N Archive will continue to serve as a foundation for endless challenges ahead.
